June 5 Duindigt, The Netherlands~ Former Belgian champion Ircalan D.A showed age is no bar as he sprinted away to win the 6.5 furlong (1300 metres) Wathba Stud Farm Cup IV at the Duindigt racecourse in The Netherlands on Sunday.
Making his first start in what is a unique 10th year of racing, the 12-year-old son of Djel Bon won the fourth race this year in the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival’s Wathba Stud Farm Cup.
Owned and trained by Mr. Johan Verstrepen Ircalan D.A was ridden by jockey Anne Engels and Sunday’s win was his 12 in 51 races! Ircalan D.A won his first race in 2002 and in 2003 was named Belgian Champion Horse.
Ircalan finished ahead of La Madou, also trained by Verstrepen which was ridden by Angeline Batist. Tequilah de Breuil finished third in the 11horse race which was run on turf over 1300 metres.
The Wathba Stud Farm Cup races are part of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival aimed to promote Arabian racing among the small owners and small stables and is held regularly.
Abdulla Al Qubaisi, director of communications of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) said, “This is what racing is all about. For such an old horse to beat a field of ten other younger horses makes it exciting. We are happy that the Wathba Stud Farm Cup race series is providing such excitement to racing fans.”
The HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival’s Wathba Stud Farm Cup races are staged with support from Invest AD, Areej Al Ameerat, La Sirene, the UAE’s General Women’s Union, Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition 2011,Wathba Stud Farm and Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club.
