Endurance Championship, races kick off new year for Abu Dhabi

smEmirates ChallengeCG6P8638January 4, 2013 – Abu Dhabi, Press release ~ Over 200 riders are expected to be battling for honours in the 120-km Emirates Championship to be held at the Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi on Saturday, January 5.

The announcement for the first rides in the New Year was made at a press conference held at the Eastern Mangroves Hotel.

Adnan Sultan Saif Al Nuaimi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Equestrian Federation, said, “We are expecting around 200 horses for the Emirates Championship. We will also be staging an 80 km Qualifier ride today (Friday).”

“The total prize money including a car will be Dh 500,000 for the Emirates Championship,” he added.

The 120-km ride will be held in five stages of 33kms, 27kms, 24kms, 20kms and 16 kms.

Al Nuaimi also announced a three-day Abu Dhabi Endurance Festival from March 28 onwards. “We will be staging a 120-km ride for Private Owners, a 100-km ride for ladies and a 140-km Open ride on the three days.”

Lara Sawaya, Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival and Head of Ladies Racing in IFAHR said, “The Festival is all set to hold the first race in the New Year which will be the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship IFAHR in Oman.

“One Australian professional jockey will join the amateur lady jockeys with the UAE’s Shathra Al Hajjaj also in the line-up,” she said.

“Before that the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival will be taking part in a Horse Show to be held in Oman next week,” Ms Sawaya said.

Talal Al Hashmi, representing the Abu Dhabi Sports Council said, “The ADSC is always keen to ensure traditional sport like endurance and Arabian horse racing is promoted.”

Mubarak Al Nuaimi of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority said, “Purebred Arabian horses and the sport they indulge in is very close to the hearts of the UAE nationals and we support it as part of our heritage and culture.”

“We are involved in the equine field for over 32 years and it is great privilege to be involved in this prestigious Emirates Championship,” said Abdul Kareem Feroze, General Manager of Al Awani General Enterprises Establishment .

Ayham Hamad representing Areej Al Ameerat thanked HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs for giving his company a chance to be part of the endurance sport.

Nafez Abbara, Projects Manager, SAS Investment, also thanked HH Sheikh Mansoor and said, “SAS Investment is proud to be involved in the two events on Friday and Saturday.”
