Sunday February 10, 2013, Abu Dhabi Press Release ~ Ernst Oertel and Tadhg O’Shea surged to the top of the UAE trainer and jockey tables respectively after Abu Dhabi’s turf provided O’Shea with a treble and Oertel with four winners.
Remarkably Oertel only saddled runners in four races and won them all, including the night’s two features, the UAE Arabian Derby and Fillies’ Classic with the victorious quartet all owned by his main patron, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In both feature races, reigning Champion Jockey O’Shea was on the winner with the undoubted highlight being the smooth victory of Skoop (Njewman (FR) x Speed (FR) by Dormane) in the 2200m UAE Arabian Derby. Winner of his only start in his native France, Skoop was making his local debut and only second career start with O’Shea always looking confident. Still nearer last than first turning for home 400m out, O’Shea oozed confidence and was able to find racing room, after which his mount ran on strongly to deny stable companion Najm Alemarat close home.
O’Shea said: “We thought they would both run well and Skoop is a really nice prospect but still learning about racing. He is potentially a really nice colt and perhaps can go on and be as good as Seraphin Du Paon.”
Stable companion Seraphin Du Paon and last year’s winner Naseem both went on to Group 1 glory.
The preceding 1600m Emirates Fillies’ Classic went the way of the same connections with Shayel Aldhabi (Bibi De Carrere (FR) x Anshoudat Farah (AE) by Chaikh Man) maintaining her unbeaten local record, destroying her rivals to win her fourth race of the season.
She made light of her penalties after three previous Abu Dhabi victories and O’Shea said: “She is good, very good. This is a high-class filly and the fast early gallop really suited her this evening. That was impressive.”
O’Shea’s treble and the owner and trainer’s quartet was initiated by the victory of Hab Nessnas (Al Nasr x Madawa by Djelfor) in the opening 1400m maiden when the colt opened his account at the third time of asking.
However, O’Shea was on ‘the wrong one’ in the following 1600m conditions race, partnering runner-up Richlore for Oertel and Sheikh Khalifa in a race won by stable companion Chick Flick (Calin Du Loup (FR) x Dixies Chick (US) by Burning Sand). James Doyle rode the winner.
Trainer Oertel said: “That has been a great evening and it has been a very good season to date. We have some nice new young horses this season, like Scoop and hopefully they can go on and emulate the likes of Seraphin Du Paon.”
The evening’s dominant owner HH Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was not eligible to have a runner in the penultimate contest, the Wathba Stud Farm Cup for Private Owners, a 1400m maiden, but that did not stop him breeding the winner – Aryaf (Bibi De Carrere (FR) x Aicha d’Espiens by Cheri Bibi), ridden by Ted Durcan for trainer, Fakhruddin Nizamuddin.
Racing concluded with a 1600m handicap, the only Thoroughbred race on the card and, just as they did seven days ago, trainer Doug Watson and jockey Pat Dobbs combined to land the spoils with Mujrayaat following in the hoofprints of last week’s winner Dr Faustus.
