February 26, 2013, Doha ~ In another big day of racing, the Gulf Cup (GCC Bred Group II Pure Arabians) QR 500,000 ($137,000)was another triumph for Umm Qarn’s Fouladh. This was Fouladh’s seventh victory in eight starts and the amazing run of successes is a clear indication that he is the best in Qatar over 1,600 metres contests. In all of Fouladh’s success, David Bouland was in the saddle and yet again the Frenchman proved his worth. The Alban de Mieulle trained Fouladh eased to one and a half length win in a time of 01:44.29. Fouladh (Amer x Jaljalah) has 2 wins now for the Gulf Cup, having won the same race last year.
Julian Smart trained Aziz Al Shahania (Prince d’Orient x Baldora de Brugeres) was ridden to victory by Richard Mullen in the Pure Arabian Maiden Plate.
In the fourth race, Shaklan(Burning Sand x Tohfa) took the 40-70 rated Handicap over 1600m away from Safqah.
The day’s proceedings opened with the Fegentri contest for Gentlemen riders, a Thoroughbred Conditions race taken by Majd Al Shajaa. British Apprentice amateur rider Freddie Mitchell took the Salem Al Hajri’s trainee to a half length win over 1,400 metres.
Looking forward, Wednesday (Feb 27) will feature the GR1 Qatar International Trophy and on Thursday’s (Feb 28) racing 15 horses have declared for their positions at the starting gates for the coveted HH The Emir Sword. Al Mujahaz will be hot to add to his recent win in the HH The Heir Apparent Sword. Then there is HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani’s classy TM Fred Texas, and Umm Qarn’s Tabarak having been in rousing form in the last six races without a loss. Also in high contention will be the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani owned and Julian Smart trained Aziz, Maseh, Mu’Azzaz, Rathowan and Mkeefa, also in the mix making it an exciting day.
