Friday, April 22 ~ It was a big night at the races as Nayef Al Khalidiah beat a field of seven to win the Prix Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Carthage-Hanibal Cup (Group-2) race at the Hippodrome in Toulouse, France.
Trained by Jean Francois Bernard and under the able hands of David Michaux, the six-year-old son of Calin Du Loup won the 2,000m in a time of 2:15:27, coming in a neck ahead of second place, Hilal Al Zaman.
A press conference before the race welcomed the UAE Ambassador to France, Mohammad M Abdullah Al Raisi and members of the UAE embassy in Paris. He later handed out the awards for the race supported by the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival, along with the Director, Lara Sawaya.
Yves Plantin, chairman of the French Arabian Racing Association (AFAC- Association Francaise du cheval Arabe de Course), said, “Considering the quality of runners and the ever increasing prize-money of this prestigious event, I think the time has come to give Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Prix Carthage-Hanibal (Group 2) a Group-1 status.” He felt that France produces some of the best Arabians and cited the winner of the 2011 Dubai Kahayla Classic Group-1 at the Dubai World Cup, the French-bred Seraphin Du Paon. Arabian racing is popular in France with 75 Arabian races on the yearly calender, 17 of them run in Toulouse.
