HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival announce HH Shaikha Fatma and Darley Awards
HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival announced it sponsorship of the Darley Awards and instituted five awards to honour women in Purebred Arabian racing in the name of HH Sheikha Bint Mubarak Darley Award for the best Lady in Arabian Racing.
At a press conference held at the Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre, Ms Lara Sawaya, Director of Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival said, “In 2012 the Darley Awards, the ‘Oscars’ of Arabian racing in the United States of America will be sponsored by the Festival and will be called the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival Darley Awards. The Darley Awards marks 25 years since its inception.”
The Darley Committee selects the nominees and a Voting Academy decides the winners. The Voting Academy is made up of knowledgeable individuals within the racing community, and the Champions are announced at the Darley Awards Dinner, said Dr. Klinsmann Wright of the American Arabian Racing Cup, the organizers of the Darley Awards.
“And for the first time ever in the Darley Awards the HH Sheikha Bint Mubarak Darley Award for the best women in Arabian Racing will also be awarded along with the US Awards in Houston in March 2012,” Lara Sawaya said.
The HH Sheikha Bint Mubarak Darley Award for the best Lady in Arabian Racing will be awarded in five categories and will be open to the whole world. The categories are Best Lady as a Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Jockey and Outstanding contribution to Arabian racing (any field), according to Ms Sawaya.
Mike Corbin, the US Ambassador to the UAE said, “It is a great honour to see the support for this Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing for Purebred Arabian horses.”
“The organization of this Festival and the Awards shows leadership and vision and it is not only about sports but also about women, about Purebred Arabian horses and about lady jockeys,” he said.
Sami Jassim Al Boneain, Chairman of International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) said, “The Festival started about three years ago and the Darley Awards is a fantastic addition. From IFAHR’s point it will breeders, owners and Purebred Arabian racing.”
The 2012 Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Flat Racing Festival Darley Horse of The Year Award (USA only) categories are:
3 Year Old Filly, 3 Year Old Colt, 4 Year Old Filly, 4 Year Old Colt, Older Mare, Older Horse, Top Breeder, Owner, Jockey and Trainer.
Essam Abdullah of the Emirates Arabian Horse Society hoped the Festival grows into one of the leading equestrian activities in the region.
Talal Al Hashmi of Abu Sports Council (ADSC) and Stephen Bowey of Invest AD also expressed their delight and support for the Shaikha Bint Mubarak Darley Award for the best Lady in Arabian Racing awards.
