February 27 Qatar ~ Doha welcomes top competition at the Qatar International Trophy Grade 1, 1600m for 4 year olds and over.

The purse of QR 500,000 ($137,500) has attracted a list of prominent runners to the February 29th card, and the addition of the recently purchased and imported top US Arabian race horse, TM Fred Texas, is creating quite an International buzz.

TM Fred Texas has been in the country for only a few weeks and seems to be settling in nicely. Todd Moak, the TM in the name, arrived from Texas, to see the race and to check on the progress of the horse he bred.

“I’m a little nervous about him,” said Moak. “Although he made the long trip fairly comfortably, it is a great deal to expect of him to settle into his new routine and be in top racing form. It was on February 1st that we found out that TM Fred Texas would leave Texas. He arrived in Doha barely two weeks ago.”

“We do appreciate the opportunity offered by the Qatar Equestrian and Racing Club to come and attend these races. We recognize Qatar’s support in the equestrian world, and in the support of Arabian racing world wide.  Al Shahania Stud  and Qatar are giving the Arabian horse good exposure to the world.”

TM Fred Texas has familiar faces to guide him as the US trainer and his regular jockey, Santos Chavez, have come along for the ride.

Thursday the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club will cap off the week with the final evening of racing featuring the H.H The Emir’s Sword, Grade 1 with a purse of QR 2,000,000 ($550,254). The 3 days of racing are one highlight of the week of top equestrian action at the 21st Qatar International Equestrian Festival under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar.

Hannie Maasdijk, Co-ordinator for the Equestrian Festival said, “We are very excited that TM Fred Texas came to Qatar to run. It is good that he will run in the 8 Furlong International Trophy instead of the 12 Furlong Emir’s Sword, as he has just arrived and has an entire change in routine as well as running on turf clockwise instead of counterclockwise. He will have some good competition in this race, but he’s got a good chance to win.”
